Young At Heart. Youth In Action.

On May 13, 2017, on the observance of the 100th Year Anniversary of the appearance of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal to three children,  over 60 students from St. Edward High School and eight adult moderators came to St. Vitus Parish in Cleveland, Ohio for Mass and then perform community service for the parish and St. Clair Avenue neighborhood, specifically Joseph House of Cleveland, Inc. at 6102 St. Clair Avenue.

The day began with a 9AM Mass followed by recitation of a decade of the rosary before proceeding to the lower church hall for donuts, juice and coffee. Under the direction of Mr. Rick Kubrak, director of community Outreach services, St. Edward High School (SEHS), Mr. Liam Haggerty, VP of Mission at SEHS, and Todd Ashdown, tennis coach at SEHS, students and adult volunteers then moved to assigned tasks for the remaining morning hours.

Students under the direction of Todd were assigned to clean-out as much as possible and load two trucks of radio and television related equipment for a store front on St. Clair Avenue where JHCI is planning to expand its clothing distribution ministry work.  JHCI board members Joan Laux and Maggie DiPenti also assisted. Students under the direction of Rick and Liam were assigned to clean-out, weed and lay mulch in various areas in the court-yard of St. Vitus Village, Village side parking lot and to lay down mulch in the church parking lot. A garage on East 61st Street, planned for demolition, was cleaned out as well as having old furniture and other items removed from another house in the St. Clair Avenue neighborhood that is being prepared to house incoming immigrants. By Noon the above tasks were completed. Rev. Joseph Boznar, Betty Svekric, and Marge, Mark and Stane Kuhar from St. Vitus also helped. Over 125 service hours were provided to benefit St. Vitus, Joseph House. and the broader St. Clair Avenue neighborhood. Students, adult volunteers and moderators then joined together in the lower church hall for a well prepared and deserved lunch. Thanks to Rick, Liam, Todd, and volunteers and alumn from St. Edward High School for your community service on a sunny and cool Saturday!
