St. Vitus Celebrates 125th Year Anniversary of its founding on Sept. 30th, 2018

St. Vitus Parish, established as the first American Slovenian Roman Catholic parish in the state of Ohio and diocese of Cleveland, will officially observe the 125th Year Anniversary of its founding on Sept. 30, 2018, SUNDAY, with three events.

The Most Reverend Nelson Perez, Bishop, Diocese of Cleveland, will bless and dedicate the newly remodeled 2,135 square foot space of Joseph House of Cleveland Inc.(JHCI), at 6108 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44103, at 9:30AM. Total remodeling cost was at $44,000 with no government funding provided. JHCI has two primary missions: resettle immigrants coming to Cleveland, Ohio and a clothing distribution ministry. JHCI has resettled 113 individuals and provided clothing for 1,300 immigrants across northeast Ohio as well as 1,200 local residents in and around the St. Clair Avenue neighborhood. Open house will be from 9:30AM to 1:30PM at JHCI. JHCI is about 100 feet from St. Vitus Church.

A Solemn Mass will start at 11:00AM in St. Vitus Church, 6019 Lausche Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44103. Bishop Nelson Perez will be the principal celebrant and homilist at this Mass along with other clergy. Singing will be in three languages, English, Latin, and Slovenian, along with wind and brass instruments under the choral direction of John F. Srsen.

A banquet will immediately follow the Mass at Slovenian National Home, 6417 St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio 44103. Cost is $50 per ticket. Tables of eight-to-ten may be reserved. Guest speaker is Mr. Dick Russ, former reporter, anchor, and executive director at, respectively, WJW-TV8 and WKYC-TV3.

St Vitus Parish was established in Aug 1893. There are 650 registered parish households with 1,050 individuals. The parish has two Saturday Language Schools (adult and K-to Gr 8), food pantry, hot meal, senior ministry, support of Joseph House, St. Vitus Catholic War Veterans Post 1655, and other corporal works of mercy. Noted alumni of St. Vitus School include the late US Senator (Ohio) Frank J. Lausche, late Auxiliary Bishop, diocese of Cleveland, A. Edward Pevec, Ph. D., and the late Edward L. Mihevic Sr., businessman and philanthropist.
