Ash Wednesday – March 1st, 2017
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent. This will occur on March 1st, 2017. Ash Wednesday normally occurs 46 days prior to Easter Sunday. Ash Wednesday derives from an ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. This practice includes the wearing of ashes placed on a head at a service on Ash Wednesday.
The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. As the priest applies the ashes to a person’s forehead, he speaks the words: “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Ashes are provided from blessed palms burned from the prior year. Services for Ash Wednesday at St. Vitus will be:
- 9:00AM – The Chapel, St. Vitus Village, 6114 Lausche Avenue
- Noon – St. Vitus Church
